JOHANNESBURG - Researchers at Wits University say at least one million South Africans could contract COVID-19 within 40 days.

The team says the country could reach a tipping point unless the government takes drastic actions.

"Following experience from other countries, we know that, if not contained, the growth of the number of people affected is very fast.

We could exponentially see a very fast growth", said one of the researchers, Professor Bruce Mellado.

On Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a 21-day nationwide lockdown following an increase in the number of people infected by COVID-19.

Professor Mellado said the team will be analysing more data following the announcement of the lockdown in order to see if there is a difference in their projections.
