Basic Education minister takes aim at school safety

JOHANNESBURG - Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is calling for an urgent meeting with Police Minister Bheki Cele.

This follows the recent killing of a North West teacher by a pupil.

The department wants input from the police, social development and schools themselves to pave the way forward.

"We have had a lot of violent incidents in our schools where learners attacked teachers," said Motshekga.

"We had to relook at protocols and within the next 10 days we will call an urgent meet with Minister Cele and Social Development."

The meeting with the police minister will largely focus on safety at schools following a number of attacks on teachers.

Last week, a pupil stabbed a teacher to death in Zeerust. The incident sent shockwaves across the country.

The department also says it's noted with concern that threats to safety at schools are increasingly becoming internal.

Schools should be safe places for teaching and learning but a new report has revealed that sexual violence is commonplace at primary schools.
