JOHANNESBURG - Convicted rapist Bob Hewitt's release on parole has been suspended.

He was convicted for the rape of two young women and sexual assault of another.

The tennis star's parole will now be referred for review to the board.

Department of Justice and Correctional Services spokesperson Chrispin Phiri says proper procedures were not followed.

"The relevant procedures regarding Hewitt's parole were not followed and in this case that is consulting the victims."

"You have to consult the victims in the event that you want to release someone on parole."

Hewitt was sentenced to six years in prison.

His parole will now be referred for review to the board.
