JOHANNESBURG - Government should consider formalising small-scale mining.

That's the view of Wits law professor, Tracy-Lynn Field.

Field's comment comes as communities on Gauteng's West Rand areas are fighting illegal miners.

They accuse them of various crimes in the area.

"The research is showing that this is one of the lucrative and also violent artisanal sectors in Africa.

"The figures show that around R40-billion rands worth of gold production every year is being lost," she said.

"We need to engage with that and allow some people to start mining formally and legally even though there are a lot of difficulties."
