Cape Town firefighters' future uncertain

CAPE TOWN - Decent jobs and improved working conditions.

Those are some of the demands made by municipal workers who took to the streets of Cape Town on Workers’ Day.

Among the dozens attending the May Day march, were firefighters, who face uncertain futures.

The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) says the City of Cape Town is undermining them and its workers.

This week, municipal officials met with over 400 firefighters without Samwu being present.

The issues firefighters face emanate from an unprotected strike in 2019.

Around 525 of them now face losing their jobs.
