JOHANNESBURG - The National Health Department says municipalities must ensure that water supply to hospitals is not disrupted.

There is no national plan for this eventuality.

On Thursday, Johannesburg's Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital had to cancel at least 36 surgeries because of water shortages.

While the water was back by Friday, an unreliable water supply to hospitals could cost lives.

Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital uses about 2,000 litres of water every minute.

And its bulk water tank has about 6-million litres of water.

The hospital does have an alternative water supply when things go wrong as they did on Thursday.
