JOHANNESBURG - "Comfortable but not complacent" is how the Gauteng Health Department is feeling after riding the fourth wave of COVID-19 infections driven by the Omicron variant.

The Head of Hospital Services at the Gauteng Health Department, Freddy Kgongwana, says the department has a plan in place to deal with a possible increase in hospital admissions.

Kgongwana said: “We can never be complacent, we remain on alert.

"We are happy that the fourth wave, the omicron hasn’t been as deadly as the Delta. We remain as ready as we were before the fourth wave. We still have our 4,000 functional beds. We currently have 2,000 beds available in Gauteng. We are a little bit comfortable but we are not complacent.”
