JOHANNESBURG - The election of the eThekwini mayor is likely to get messy, according to elections analyst Wayne Sussman.
The eThekwini council is the only metro in the country that has not yet elected its mayor.
Proceedings were postponed on Monday after ANC supporters stormed the meeting and the electricity went off.
If the ANC's deal with the IFP held then today with little fan fair an ANC mayor would have been elected quite comfortably in eThekwini and it would have been a stable coalition majority," he said.
"But as we have seen in places like Newcastle and Richardsbay, the IFP is walking away from the agreement to the ANC and this is absolutely significant. What this means for today's council meeting is that the ANC can probably rely on parties like the African Independent Congress but that doesn't take them to 51 plus mark where they can be assured that their mayoral candidate will be elected."
