JOHANNESBURG - Private hospital group Netcare is taking strain from COVID-19.

It says a sharp fall in hospital admissions in March has resulted in a R 143-million revenue loss.

The effect of the pandemic worsened in April when acute hospital patient days almost halved.

Emergency and trauma-related activity also fell dramatically, with a decline of up to 60% in unnatural deaths in the country during the period.

It reported a 6.3% decrease in adjusted headline earnings per share for the half-year period.

The company has committed to treating public COVID-19 patients at its facilities on a not-for-profit, cost-recovery basis.
