JOHANNESBURG - Increased testing can’t be blamed for the spike in Covid-19 infections, according to Ridhwaan Suliman from the CSIR.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported 16,055 new COVID-19 infections in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Deputy Health Minister Sibongiseni Dhlomo says it is too early to tell how severe the Omicron variant will be.

The variant is said to be driving the spike in infections.

According to Dhlomo, South Africa has officially entered the fourth wave of COVID-19 infections.
