"COVID-19 cases are increasing at a rapid rate in our province," he said.

Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City in the Eastern Cape account for 50 percent of active COVID-19 cases in the province.

Mabuyane said the virus is moving fast.

"That means that residents in both metros must take extra care of their health during this festive season because the virus is spreading faster in these two metros."

The premier said only ten percent of COVID-19 hospital beds are in use in the Eastern Cape.

Mabuyane said this is good news, but urged people to get their jabs and protect themselves.
