JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng health is in a serious but stable condition.

Acting Gauteng Health MEC Jacob Mamabolo said the public health system is stable but admits there are challenges.

Public hospitals have been marred by staff shortages and poor service.

Mamabolo said, "the health facilities in our province are working and running very well, however, that does not mean there are no challenges.

"Remember we are managing big numbers every day and if you also consider neighbouring provinces as well, they come here, we don't have all resources required."

Mamabolo said the concerns raised by health workers about COVID-19 preparedness are important but said the output and performance of the health service, as a whole, is good.
