JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's COVID-19 death toll has surpassed 11,000.

The health department reported 259 new deaths in the past 24 hours.

Most of the latest fatalities are from Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 infections is 568,919.

More than 432,000 patients have recovered from the virus, translating to a recovery rate of just under 76%.
