JOHANNESBURG - It's important to get the vulnerable vaccinated ahead of winter.

Infectious disease doctor Richard Lessells warns another severe wave could still hit the country.

He believes it will be similar to the second and third waves.

"What we do know now is that we can get protection against severe disease up very high in the community by vaccinating those at high risk of being hospitalised," Lessells said.

"We could see another variant that's more severe than omicron that's more likely to make people very sick, to make them need oxygen in hospital.

"That's why the priority has to be getting the vaccine to the people who are at highest risk of that happening."
