JOHANNESBURG - Acting Health Minister Mmaloko Kubayi-Ngubane is concerned about social gatherings and alcohol use.

She says government is assessing the impact on increasing COVID-19 cases in Gauteng.

The minister also says there will be a focus on mass screening in hard-hit areas.

South Africa is technically in a third wave, with Gauteng leading the surge.

"Activities such as gatherings, we’re seeing a lot of them, those are worrying," said Kubayi-Ngubane.

"We make sure our message in terms of social distancing, wearing of the mask continues in the community because we can see the community spread."
