Phaahla: SA not yet in 5th Covid-19 wave

JOHANNESBURG - Health Minister Joe Phaahla says the country is not yet in the fifth COVID-19 wave.

He says it will take a few more days to ascertain if the country has entered the next wave.

He says the country could enter the fifth wave earlier than expected.

"It is argued that we can say that we’re in the fifth wave if we have sustain more than 6,237 cases per day on a seven-day period," Phaahla said.

"That would tell us that we are indeed in a fifth wave. We have to wait for a few more days.

"We have been informed that when a new wave comes it will be driven by a new variant. We have not been alerted to a new variant except changes in the Omicron."
