PRETORIA - South Africa is one of five countries participating in global vaccine trials for children.
About 2,000 children aged between 6 months and 17 years will take part.
They will receive two doses, 28 days apart.
The first participants were vaccinated on Friday.
The trial will provide much-needed data on how those younger than 17 react to the jab.
Co-Chairperson of the Ministerial Advisory Committee, Professor Koleka Mlisana, said they welcome the trial and eagerly await the results.
"Obviously we're always looking for data because right now we don't have data on younger children, especially below 12.
"The vaccines that are now approved are 12 years and up so whatever study that can get up and running, that's going to give us more data [which] we will more than welcome, obviously," Mlisana said.
