JOHANNESBURG - Some of the Western Cape’s field hospitals are being closed following a decrease in COVID-19 cases and hospitalisations, particularly in the Metro.
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde says it’s clear they’ve been able to deal with the pandemic and he’s now appealing to government to allow the province to completely open the economy to deal with unemployment, poverty and hunger.
Dubbed the Hospital of Hope, more than 1,500 patients were treated at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, the largest COVID-19 field hospital.
The last patient will be accepted this week before the doors are closed in mid-September.
With a bed capacity of more than 800, there are only 57 patients at present.
The Thusong field hospital has officially closed and Doctors without Borders has moved its capacity to the Eastern Cape.
The province will, however, be holding on to some of its other field hospitals, in case there is a resurgence of COVID-19.

Like Brakengate – a warehouse, that was converted into a fully functional COVID-19 hospital.
Winde says the province has proved itself in the first 100 days of lockdown and is now ready to move on.
"We enabled the most amazing innovation in our government. We deliver medicine now to vulnerable people. If you are elderly or if you have a comorbidity," Winde said.
"Over 280,000 people in our province Mr President. We now deliver medicines directly to your door.”
Winde says the complete reopening of the economy must happen now to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe.
