Concern about attacks on hospital staff, patients

JOHANNESBURG - Hospital violence is once again in the spotlight.

The DA in Gauteng says it's concerned about ongoing attacks on patients and staff.

Since January last year, 39 cases of assault involving patients were reported at the Bheki Mlangeni Hospital in Soweto.

That's according to Gauteng Health MEC, Nomathemba Mokgethi.

Thirty were mental health patients assaulted by other psychiatric patients.

Nine employees were also attacked.

DA health spokesperson Jack Bloom is calling on government to ensure the safety and well-being of psychiatric patients.

A doctor was assaulted this week at the Lilian Ngoyi Clinic in Soweto.
