JOHANNESBURG - Prison officials held a surprise raid at the Leeuwkop prison in Bryanston, Johannesburg on Thursday.
It's the third raid correctional services have carried out this month.

Contraband including phones, money and other items were seized from inmates.

It's part of Operation Vala aimed at foiling escape attempts and assaults during the festive season.
Deputy Minister of Correctional Services, Thabang Makwetla says they will be dealing with those found guilty of possessing illegal contraband.
He is also concerned by the number of attempted suicides in the country's facilities.
