De Klerk recovering in hospital

JOHANNESBURG - Former president FW de Klerk is recovering at the Panorama Hospital in Cape Town.

He was admitted on Friday with pneumothorax, which is an abnormal collection of air in the thin space between the lung and the chest wall.

His foundation says the 82-year-old underwent a successful procedure on Saturday morning.

Doctors expect to release him from the hospital sometime next week.

De Klerk was the last President of apartheid South Africa and was in office from 1989 to 1994.

He also served as deputy president in Nelson Mandela’s government of national unity.
