JOHANNESBURG - Eskom insists that the recent spate of blackouts is not the new normal.

The power utility says it’s working on various projects to bring additional capacity online.

Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter was updating on operational performance earlier.

“I think its important to emphasise that we should not accept load-shedding and the lack of generation capacity as the new normal," he said.

"While its been going on for 14 years now, we need to take urgent steps to address load-shedding."

Eskom COO Jan Oberholzer said we have experienced 32 days of power cuts this year.

That’s six more days compared to the same period last year.

Eskom is implementing Stage two blackouts from 5pm until 10pm on Wednesday.
