JOHANNESBURG- The decision on whether school holidays will be cancelled to save the academic year will be announced by next week.

That’s according to Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga.

Mhlanga says it’s one of the recovery plans the department is considering.

"There's a whole range of issues that need to be taken into account as we plan an initiative that will get us back as far as the school term is concerned.

"We need to work very hard to make sure that everyone agrees to this plan," said Mhlanga.

In order to make up for the lost time in the 2020 academic calendar, school holidays could be scrapped.

"Another thing we might need to do is to remove school holidays because the lockdown has now been extended and we are losing many more days," he said.

"We need to recover the time lost somewhere and the first place to go to is indeed the school holidays."
