JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng government is adamant e-tolls aren't working and cannot continue.
Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC, Jacob Mamabolo has rubbished the e-toll system, calling it diabolical and doomed from the onset.
He said Gauteng residents must no longer be burdened by this system.
Mamabolo said, "Gauteng provincial government has put together a comprehensive detailed proposal that has been properly modelled by technical experts and they show we can generate ore money better, outperform the current e-tolls financial targets on revenue generation, protect the public purse and the financial position of <the> government or the fiscus and that model we submitted it."
"To date, we have not heard a word, what we are hearing is AARTO trying to smuggle issues back. From where we stand, the e-tolls never performed on their financial targets."
"They are not performing today, they are not going to perform tomorrow. They were wrongly modelled, there was no proper risk analysis, concrete conditions of South Africa were not taken into account. This was a heroic failure in the sense that people perhaps had good intentions but what a dismal performance."
