JOHANNESBURG - Energy expert Lungile Mashele says Eskom does not have a grip on its own operations.

She says it is the first time in years that the utility is being honest with the public and the diagnosis is worse than expected.

"I think for the first time in a long time, Eskom was explicit about the state of their plant and to tell us that they are performing at the worst that they have ever performed and even if you look at their track record since the current leadership took over in the last three years, it has deteriorated incredibly," she said.

"The COO was at pains just explaining how bad the situation really is."

The utility says it requires between 4,600 megawatts of generation capacity for maintenance so that the national grid does not suffer years from now.
