JOHANNESBURG - Health workers have been advised to take COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
However, the turnout has been disappointing.
Professor Linda-Gail Bekker explained the importance of the booster.
Bekker said, "I think because the reduction in protection against the infection, there has been move around the world to say we need to top the protection level up again and try and get people protected more."
"This is particularly important for healthcare workers, because we need to keep them workforce going. There has been recommendation to keep the protection high in our health care workers. And that means taking another shot, so you have Pfizer you get the third shot."
"We put the healthcare workers on the queue again to get their second J&J shot. When people get that second dose of J&J their protection goes up to 92, 93[-percent] and that is where we really wanna keep the healthcare workers as well, that is why we have been promoting the booster.”
