Former EC rugby boss due in court

PORT ELIZABETH - Former rugby boss Cheeky Watson’s fraud and corruption trial is due to get under way at the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court today.

Watson and his three others, Nadia Gerwel, Andrea Wessels and Mandisi Mkasa, are accused of defrauding the City’s Integrated Public Transport System of R12-million.

The State has added an additional charge of failure to report suspicion of theft against Watson.

His legal team submitted an objection to this addition.

Magistrate Lionel Lindoor dismissed the application saying it would not be in the interests of justice to grant a separation of the trial.

The former head of Eastern Province Rugby has said the allegations against him were malicious.
