File: Dr Alex Boraine has died aged 87.
JOHANNESBURG - Former TRC vice-chairperson Alex Boraine has died at the age of 87.
His family released a statement on Wednesday saying that Boraine died peacefully at his home in Cape Town.
"We salute his lifelong dedication to non-racialism, human rights, democracy and social justice in South Africa and around the world," the statement read.
"Most of all he inspired us with his passion for life and his big heart."
Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu said Boraine was a true gentleman who loved his country.
In 2014, President Jacob Zuma awarded Boraine with the order of the Baobab for his contribution in the field of social justice.
He is survived by his wife Jennifer, four children and seven grandchildren.
