Fraud-accused former Gauteng Transport officials granted bail

JOHANNESBURG - Two former government officials in the Gauteng Transport and Roads Department, have been granted bail in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday.

The pair handed themselves over to the Hawks following an investigation dating from 2015.

They're accused of corruption and fraud relating to the Gauteng transport department tenders, to the tune of R16-million.

The suspects will make their next court appearance in March. 

KZN Hawks' Simphiwe Mhlongo said, "indeed the two accused briefly appeared at the Durban specialised commercial crime court, facing charges of fraud and corruption."

"There are number of charges that are added, there are more than 36 that involve fraud and corruption."

"We were working together with the department of transport and road in Gauteng province."

"We leave no stone unturned...they were granted bail, accused no1 R20,000, accused no2 R10,000. They will reappear on 23 March."
