BLOEMFONTEIN - The Free State Basic Education Department has condemned a recent stabbing involving school pupils.

A 13-year-old in Hertzogville fatally stabbed a child from another school on Friday.

The Department's spokesperson, Howard Ndaba said, "we had an incident where a 13-year-old learner, from one of the schools in Herzogville a small town in the Free State. This 13-year-old learner who is attending a high school around the area was at the school outside. He attended Grade 6 at that school, he was waiting outside the school, apparently for his friend, according to his parents."

"When he came out, we were told, there was a squabble between two learners that then led to the stabbing of another learner in the chest, who is also doing Grade 6 at a primary school in Hertzogville."

The Department reportedly met with representatives of both schools and said psychosocial support will be supplied to the school learners, teachers, and affected families.
