JOHANNESBURG - The Free State boasts the top provincial matric pass rate in the country.
This as the Basic Education Department celebrates a ground-breaking public schools overall pass rate of 81.3%.
Free State Education MEC Tate Makgoe says, "The biggest thing is teamwork. I involve SGBs, teachers, the community, church leaders. We make education a societal issue."
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced the matric results on Tuesday.
"The leading province for the year is the Free State at 88.4%, followed by Gauteng, the North West, Western Cape, KZN, Mpumalanga, EC and NC and Limpopo."

Motshekga also announced that no province performed lower than 70%.
KwaZulu-Natal saw an increase of 5.1%, sitting at 81.3%.
KZN Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu says, "We set an 80% pass rate, and partnered with SANDF who helped with Maths and Science classes."
And it was excitement all around.
It's been a long road for these pupils, but they're looking forward to the future as new chapter awaits these hopeful youngsters.
