JOHANNESBURG - An explosion at the Palmiet water pumping station has left several suburbs in Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane facing water shortages.

Rand Water says the explosion took place on Sunday, leaving three pumps destroyed.

The Palmiet station supplies several reservoirs operated by Rand Water and is now pumping well below capacity.
