Talk of energy deals for politically connected fake news: Gordhan

JOHANNESBURG - Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan has trashed talk that politically connected individuals will benefit from new energy deals.

Eskom was forced to turn off the lights this week following a number of breakdowns at plants.

Gordhan said there are a number of key problems at Eskom.

He explained the problems facing the power utility were operational, financial, and a lack of skilled and proficient labour.

The minister said the issues at Eskom are like a huge onion and peeling away the layers will help to understand the issue.

Gordhan stated an arms-length assessment by local and international engineers is being conducted and will be complete as soon as possible.
