JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Basic Education has gazetted amended regulations on new dates for the reopening of schools over the weekend.
The review of the school calendar comes after a Cabinet decision that schools should break for four weeks.
According to the new regulations, pupils in Grades R, 1, 2, 3, 4,6,9,10 and Grade 11 will return to school on 24 August.
Grade 12 pupils returned to school on 3 August and Grade 7 pupils are allowed to return on 10 August.
The last batch of pupils in Grades 5 and 8 as well as those who have severe intellectual disabilities in Grades 4 and 5, will return on 31 August.
The 2020 Grade 12 examinations will be completed by 15 December and the marking will be concluded on 22 January with results released on 23 February 2021.
The new school year will commence on 25 January 2021 for teachers and learners a few days later.
The regulations emphasise that schools should continue to practise social distancing and rigorous hygiene.
