Police fire stun grenades to disperse Zandile Gumede supporters

DURBAN – Police have used stun grenades to disperse supporters of embattled eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede.

Gumede’s supporters are adamant that Gumede will report for duty.

There was a heavy police presence outside the City Hall Durban as the mayor’s supporters awaited her arrival.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has made it clear that Gumede can't return to work.

Gumede is accused of fraud and corruption.

She is out on R50,000 bail. Gumede’s 30-day leave has lapsed and she was expected to resume her mayoral duties on Thursday.

The eThekwini mayor as well as Newcastle Mayor Ntuthuko Mahlaba, who is facing murder charges, were ordered by the ANC to take a 30-day leave of absence.

Gumede’s supporters held a night vigil on Wednesday night.
