Hawks arrest SA ex-ambassador to Iran over Turkcell license

File: The Hawks have arrested South Africa's former ambassador to Iran Yusuf Saloojee over his alleged involved in facilitating the reversal or cancellation of a cell phone operating license awarded to Turkish mobile company Turkcell by the Iranian government.

JOHANNESBURG - The Hawks have arrested South Africa's former ambassador to Iran Yusuf Saloojee.

He appeared briefly in the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court facing charges of corruption.

Saloojee was allegedly involved in facilitating the reversal or cancellation of a cell phone operating license awarded to Turkish mobile company Turkcell by the Iranian government.

The license was later granted to MTN South Africa.

The former ambassador allegedly pocketed R1.4-million for his role in facilitating the deal, and deposited the money into an account of a firm of attorneys.

Salojee was granted R4,000 bail and the matter has been postponed to the 17th of April 2019.
