JOHANNESBURG - Head of Presidency Sibongile Besani said President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leaked audio from the ANC NEC meeting has been taken out of context.

Ramaphosa appears to have told his comrades that he is prepared to fall on the sword to protect the governing party.

The president has been under fire over the recording but Besani said the ANC will never condone the misuse of state coffers.

"There’s a full context of the meeting, what was discussed was the CR17 funds and the president was saying that it's important to know the difference between getting money from private people than the ANC receiving money from state coffers," Besani said.

"No individual should drag the ANC for his own personal campaigns. The president makes reference to what’s in the public knowledge. If I say I’d rather get money from elsewhere than use state coffers, that’s not a calculation of guilt, it's actually an explanation of how we don’t want to drag ANC. There’s an issue of context here, people were coming with other campaigns and the president said we should focus on the CR17 funds.”
