Health Minister tackles problems in EC mental health services

JOHANNESBURG - Professor Dan Mkhize will assist the Eastern Cape Health Department to deliver improved mental health services.

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has appointed Mkhize as the provincial administrator of mental health services.

Mkhize's main function will be to implement the recommendations of the Health Ombudsman's report.

Earlier this year, Dr Malegapuru Makgoba probed allegations of malpractice and human rights abuses at Tower Psychiatric Hospital in Fort Beaufort.

Minister Motsoaledi says he's confident Mkhize will do a great job.

"He's seasoned and competent in the field of mental health," the minister said.
