A grade nine pupil at Hyde Park High faces detention because a teacher said her natural hair was "distracting".
JOHANNESBURG - A grade nine pupil at Hyde Park High faces detention because of her Afro.
Zoe Chibuye (13) was late for school last Friday and had to report to the school's reception.
"I was standing in the queue to sign my record of lateness," said Zoe.
"She [teacher] immediately said I have detention. I said, "why?". She said my hair is distracting and attention-grabbing."
The teen's mother says she didn't believe her daughter at first.
"She usually has it braided. And then one week she has it out she gets detention," said Gloria Chibuye.
Gauteng Education Department officials will now investigate.
MEC Panyaza Lesufi said a team will be sent to the school.
"If you detain a learner you must detain them after notifying the relevant people about the transgression if there is a transgression," he said.
In 2016, there was a similar case at Pretoria Girls High School.
