JOHANNESBURG - Icasa has set its sights on opening up the pay TV market.

It's considering new restrictions for DStv owner Multichoice in an effort to curb its market dominance.

Icasa's draft findings on the Inquiry into Subscription Broadcasting Services highlighted Multichoice's increasing presence in the video-on-demand market in South Africa.

The broadcasting company has about 6.6 million South African subscribers, while it's streaming services DStv Now and Showmax, have an audience of 595,000, dominating Netflix's estimated 400,000.

The restrictions, if implemented, could limit the number of Hollywood movies MultiChoice is allowed to buy the rights to.
