Idai rescuers focusing on families and children: Unesco

Rescue workers have prioritised families and children in efforts to deal with the impact of cyclone Idai. 

BEIRA - Cyclone Idai has claimed hundreds of lives in Southern Africa.

Unicef spokesperson Priscilla Ofori-Amanfo says their focus is on rescuing families and especially children.

Rivers have burst their banks and homes have been destroyed in cyclone-battered Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

Officials say hundreds of thousands of people are still displaced and many people remain missing.

Unicef said they are working closely with governments to deal with the devastation.

Emergency services are working tirelessly in Mozambique and Zimbabwe for days, trying to save as many lives as possible under the most trying of conditions.
