JOHANNESBURG - South Africa is engaging its SADC neighbours so they can intervene on the issue of illegal immigrants and expats from their countries who enter South Africa to commit crimes.

That's according to Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi.

"The DG of Home Affairs and DDG of Immigration Services met with the permanent secretary of Home Affairs of Lesotho to discuss this issue of illegality and illegal mining activities and areas of cooperation, including issues of deportation," Motsoaledi said.

He said a meeting with Mozambique officials will take place later in August.

Various stakeholders briefed Parliament's Minerals and Energy oversight committee about how they're fighting illegal mining.

It was revealed that since 2019 there have been over 4,000 arrests for illegal mining.
