Inquiry into data prices continues

JOHANNESBURG - The commission of inquiry into the data services market enters its third day on Friday.

Political parties and internet service providers are presenting their cases.

On Thursday, CEOs of the big mobile operators told the inquiry data prices in South Africa are competitive and can't be offered at a lower rate due to cost constraints.

They say data prices will tumble when communications regulator Icasa finally licences access to new frequencies.

The Competition Commission’s role is to examine what factors of the market and value chain which may lead to high data prices.

Activists say internet access changes lives and plays a crucial role in our economy.

But it seems data costs are getting in the way.
