JOHANNESBURG - The international rhino horn trade remains prohibited.

There has been misinformation suggesting that the ban has been lifted.

The Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries says horns can be exported for non-commercial purposes only.

CRIME STATS: Rhino poaching drastically reduced

"A person can trade domestically, within the country, with rhino horn but internationally it can be exported for non-commercial purposes only.

"Commercial trade is the part that is prohibited internationally," said Magdel Boshof from the government's Threatened or Protected Species Policy Development.

In July, the environment minister reported a nearly 53 percent drop in the number of rhinos that were killed by poachers in 2020.
