JOHANNESBURG - There could be a lack of resources at the South African Police Service on Monday as thousands of officers are threatening to embark on an illegal strike.

The men and women in blue are unhappy about the lack of promotions.

Police minister Bheki Cele last year pledged to address the backlog of over 69, 000 advancements.

Cele said that has now been reduced to 45, 000.

Cele, however, said the South African Police Union and the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union have told him they spent time convincing their members not to go on strike.

“It's illegal for the South African Police to go on strike. It's even worse for a person that would be on the position of authority to make that call,” he said

He said police are trying to find out where the rumours of the strike emanated.
