City of Joburg warns against land invasions

Disgruntled Lawley residents are protesting because their shacks were demolished by the Red Ants on instruction from the City of Johannesburg.

JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg is warning against the invasion of land and buildings.

The city stated it will not tolerate land invasions under the guise that evictions aren't allowed during the lockdown.

It said it demolished around 500 unoccupied structures in Lawley, South of Johannesburg.

The city said the move is in line with a court ruling which found the demolishing of structures was aimed at preventing land invasions.

Johannesburg Mayor Geoff Makhuba said occupied structures have been spared until the lockdown is suspended.

Residents, however, accuse the Red Ants of destroying their homes.
