JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg has assured residents that drastic measures will be taken should the strong and toxic smell persist.

It believes the source is beyond the city perimeters.

The city's Air Quality Management Unit says the ‘rotten egg’ smell is commonly associated with hydrogen sulphide.

"We are continuing to monitor the situation for the past few days. There is an indication that the situation will improve over the weekend but if does not we will have to make that call to get everyone involved to come up with a solution," the city's Michael Sun said.

"We need to find the location of the source. We will welcome information from the public so that we can manage the situation together with the emergency plan."
