JOHANNESBURG - The Fair Trade Independent Tobacco Association (Fita) says lifestyle diseases pose a higher health risk to COVID-19 patients than smoking.
Fita wants the government to lift its ban on the sale of tobacco.
The company made its argument at the High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday.
Judgment in the case has been reserved.
“The greatest risks of a health system are obesity, diabetes, cardiac arrest, cancer and nobody is suggesting that tobacco isn’t harmful but what we do know is that there is legislation in South Africa that deals with the regulation of tobacco products," said Fita counsel Arnold Subel.
The government has asked the High Court in Pretoria to give it time to reflect on its regulations relating to the ban of tobacco products should its decision be found to be flawed.
