LADYSMITH - Ladysmith mayor Vincent Madlala has appeared in the Ezakheni magistrate's court on Monday.

The Hawks arrested him as part of investigations into political killings in KwaZulu-Natal.

Madlala has been released on bail.

His lawyer Justin Heunis believes his client's arrest is politically motivated.

"We come here this morning [Monday] they do not oppose bail, he's being released on bail," Heunis said.

"I want to put it to you, we have the police on video footage we will expose them for who they are and what they did. This is [a] trump-up and I believe it's political."
