JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng's online applications for Grade 1 and 8 pupils are officially open and will remain open until 25 July.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi admitted that the proposed time frame for the application process will put pressure on the system.

Lesufi stated that portions of the process have been eliminated including the physical delivery of documentation.

“You’ll see that we’ve eliminated an element where people can just walk in to drop documents or people can just walk in to make an application because they can bring the virus [COVID-19] within the schooling environment and within our offices.”

Lesufi said that the process has been limited to 30 days to prevent overlap with the new academic season.

Last year, over 300,000 online applications for Grade 1 and 8 placements were received and the application period was extended from May to August.

Parents criticised the system, saying that the online application process is flawed.
